 COUSINEAU WINS CHAMPIONSHIP!

The final round of the R.A.C.E. Super Series was held this past weekend at Shannonville Motorsports Park near Belleville, Ontario.  Rob had a 22 point lead over rookie rider #89 Will Hornblower in the Middleweight Twins class and was feeling confident for the weekend. “It’s a good feeling, all I really need to do is finish the race and the title is mine”. Kana and Rob arrived at the track early Saturday morning greeted by a wet track and rainy skies. Practice and the heat races were all held in wet conditions.

To shorten up the schedule a couple final races were held late Saturday afternoon and the Middleweight Twins race was the last one for the day. The skies had cleared, the track was dry and Rob was starting second on the front row. The flag dropped and although Hornblower got ahead initially Cousineau railed the outside line in turn 1 to take the lead going into turn 2 on the first lap and there was no looking back from that point on.  Putting in consistently fast laps for the entire 10 lap event the gap between #108 and #89 grew on each time around and Rob was never challenged by Will.

“Once I got ahead I knew I had to put my head down and ride really well to beat Will. I pushed hard right until the chequered flag and claimed the title. It feels great! I’ve had a lot fun racing this year and getting the title was just a bonus. With Kana winning the SOAR Formula Femme Championship we have two title holders in the house now.

Rob ended the season with 3 wins, was on the podium for each round and accumulated 144 points while second place finisher Hornblower finished with 115.

Rob would like to thank the following for their support throughout the 2011 season: Mom and Dad Cousineau, Gynette Cousineau and Comfort Inn Hotels, Toni Sharpless at Motovan, David Cyna at Suzuki of Newmarket, Stephen at Durham Top Quality Collision, Yoshi Hamaguchi and OGK Kabuto Helmets, Lee and Allison at Hindle Exhaust, Pirelli-Orion Motorsports, Brian Kamp.

August 15th, 2011

Racers in Ontario had to make a choice this past weekend between two race organizations who could not avoid having conflicting rounds this past weekend. Shannonville for the RACE round 4 or Grand Bend for SOAR round 4 (many also attended at Vintage Road Race event at Mosprt). With Rob chasing a championship at RACE and Kana chasing one at SOAR they each loaded a vehicle and trailer and went to chase their respective dream!

Rob had plenty of practice Saturday morning and after winning Saturday's heat race was awarded the top qualifying position for Sunday's race. "I had a slight challenge for the lead but I quickly regained my focus and I think was ahead by at least 10 seconds when I took the checkered flag". Rob now has a 100 point lead over second place rider Will Hornblower with 64 points. There are two rounds remaining.

Kana had a new circuit to race on as the SOAR series attended the newly renovated and freshly paved Grand Motorplex road course this past weekend. She spent Friday and Saturday morning learning the very tight circuit, better suited for a 125GP bike, and finding the quick way around.  She still managed to qualify first on Saturday afternoon

Sunday morning was plagued with bad weather bouncing from rain to dry eventually settling on dry weather for the afternoon races. "I just wanted to run a steady/consistent race and was very happy to take the checkered flag first once again". That makes four consecutive wins for Kana and places her in a very strong position for the championship with 64 points of Jennifer Roth's 46 points.

July 25, 2011

Another great race weekend for BulletMotoRacing at Shannonville Motorsports Park near Bowmanville, ON this past weekend. As if the extreme heat and humid temperatures weren't enough to deal with Rob had a slight case of food poisoning due to ... well that's another story, this is about racing. No Friday practice due to the reasons mentioned so Rob had to get quickly up to pace during Saturday mornings practice sessions. He was struggling to get up to speed having just competed on the same circuit just two weeks ago on a completely different motorcycle for the National event. However, the heat races which determine starting positions for Sunday's races went on Saturday afternoon and Rob was able to secure the 2nd place starting position for both the Middleweight Twins and the Middleweight Sportsman races.

The RACE officials had a tight schedule and decided to run the MS race scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. to go at the end of the day Saturday. So they lined up and off they went. 15 year old Will Hornblower #89 got the whole shot and Rob spent the entire race doing consistent laps trying to chase him down but the #89 was simply faster. "I finished second and was happy with that. It was tough, I thought I was going to pass out a couple times and really had to focus".

Sunday brought some cooler temps and a lot less humidity, perfect for racing! The MT race was held as scheduled and this time I got the better of Hornblower off the line and led for three laps until he made a nice outbreaking move at the end of the back straight to claim the lead of the race. "I kept him closer this time. He made be the young gun but this kid ain't done yet! I plan on having more for him next time."

BulletMoto would like to thank our supporters; Durham Top Quality Collision, Motovan, Suzuki of Newmarket, Hindle Exhaust, OGK Kabuto Helmets, Vortex Racing, Impact Safe-T-Armor and Orion Motorsports.

July 17, 2011

We're at the mid way point of the season and the team is doing great! We've just returned from another SOAR weekend where Kana once again was the one to beat. She laid down her personal best lap times and almost lapped the entire field during Sunday's 12 lap race claiming her third straight win.

The previous weekend was CSBK National event at Shannonville where Rob also achieved a personal best. It was a tough start getting the Durham Top Quality Collision/Motovan sponsored GSX-R 600 working to his liking. "It didn't want to stay planted through some of the faster turns so we made a few changes and things gradually improved." By Friday's qualifying session Rob had put himself solidly in position to attack. Both Saturday and Sunday races were tons of fun with a 16th on Saturday and a 11th on Sunday with a personal best lap time.

COUSINEAU WINS!!!

Round 2 of the regional "R.A.C.E. SUPER SERIES" was held this past weekend at SMP near Belleville, Ontario. Friday's practice day was beautiful with high 28 degree temps and sun shinning all day. Unfortunately that weather would not stick around for the weekend as heavy rain, strong wind and overall gloominess would cover the circuit for the entire weekend.

Saturday's 6 lap heat race started out well with Rob getting the lead from the start however after 3 laps the Durham Top Quality Collision/Motovan sponsored SV650 would encounter misfire issues causing a sever lack of power. Will Hornblower #89 would take advantage and make the pass on the #108 of Cousineau on the back straight. It took a lap or two for Rob to figure out how to ride the misbehaving bike and regain the lead entering Allen's corner on the second to last lap, claiming the win and pole position for Sunday's race.

Sunday brought even more rain and all out nasty weather. The morning practices were cut short and a revised race schedule was presented. The Middleweight Twins race was fourth on the schedule and Rob was ready to go. The green light came on and Rob shot into the first corner into the lead. Riding a strong and steady pace Rob held the lead for the entire race not being challenged a single time. "I finally won !!! It was a good race. I was very confident from the start having had a lot of rain practice on the same circuit last year with current SV650 Cup Champion Michel Sabourin. We played around a lot on that day and it helped me for this weekend. Now that I have my first win, I just want more! I'm in a good position in for the Championship and just need to keep riding smart."

May 3rd, 2011

The first race of the year has been run! Early May weather conditions brought a bit of everything with things chilly and winds blowing for Sunday's races. Rob used Saturday's heat race to put himself on the front row qualifying third. When the green flag dropped on Sunday Rob got a great start, setting the pace and leading for 5 laps.  The rest of the race Rob and fellow SV rider Hans Van Sleuwen #8 swapped positions fighting for the lead. "I misjudged my entry into turn 5a on the last lap and Hans scooted up the inside. I stuck on close hoping to make a pass at the hairpin but  it didn't happen". Hans would cross the finish line 0.125 seconds ahead!

"It was a good race. I got a little lazy in the middle of the race and it cost me the win but we collected some good points for the championship. I'm really looking forward to round 2 in a couple weeks and thanks to Kana for being a great crew chief this weekend!"

BulletMoto would like to thank its supporters; Durham Top Quality Collision, Motovan, Suzuki of Newmarket, Hindle Exhaust, OGK Kabuto Helmets, Vortex Racing, Impact Safe-T-Armor and Orion Motorsports.

March 2011,

We've just returned from testing/vacation in the south. JenningsGP in north central Florida was our home for three days and the weather co operated perfectly. Kana was able to get comfortable on her new GSX-R 600 and we worked out most of the bugs a "new to you" race bike can have. Had a great time with the large group of Canadian riders escaping the cold and met some great southerners.

September 14th 2010,

A 1st place finish in a 3 hour endurance race for Rob and anther win for Kana in the Femme race at SOAR.

A last minute decision to enter a hour hour endurance race in the newly formed SOAR (Southern Ontario Association of Racing) held at Toronto Motorsports Park resulted in a great finish for Rob and team mates Chris Dopke and Michel Sabourin. "We threw this together at the last minute not really knowing what we were getting into and I'd say it worked out pretty good" said Rob from the top spot on the podium. Each of the riders rode approximately an hour to complete 40 to 50 laps each. Riding the Suzuki SV650 meant all three would be comfortable on the bike as each has achieved success on the machine.

Rob also competed in the Novice 600 and Novice Superbike classes where he finished 15th and 12th respectively. He said after the race "I'm starting to have fun on the 600 now. There are still some suspension issues to deal with but they are minor and I can focus on riding the bike now. Next year should be interesting."

Kana put together another successful weekend. She qualified first in the Femme class and finished the race over 25 seconds ahead of second place finisher Sarah Bevan. "I had a good weekend, we don't come here often and it's nice to meet and compete against other racers in our area." She also competed in the Battle of the Twins race where she qualified 2nd and finished 5th after a tough battle with lap traffic.

September 6th 2010,

Matsumoto wins and Cousineau finishes 2nd in the SV Cup at the R.A.C.E. regional series.

It was a great finish for Bulletmoto racing in what were very difficult weather conditions. The weekend started with a Friday evening "Racing for Autism" event which managed to raise over $5000.00 for the cause. Rob managed to get a few practice laps in during the Friday evening event in very wet and rainy conditions. Saturday's weather was extremely windy and the afternoon's qualifying heat races had to be cancelled for the rider's and the official's safety.

Sunday brought more unpredictable weather. The morning's practice sessions were dry but the afternoon would be a completely different story. Kana's WCC race was first up and she had to decide minutes before the race if rain tires or dry tires should be used. She went with rain tires and it was the right decision as the skies opened up and soaked the track  It was a bizarre start as none of the other Women's Cup Competitors made it to the grid and had to start from pit lane. After 2 laps Kana had established a 15 second lead when the race was red flagged. The track had time to dry out somewhat for the restart of the race twenty minutes later and that took away Kana's advantage over the higher horsepower 600 cc machine of eventual class champion Nathalie Provost.. She would score a well earned second place finish in the shortened 6 lap race.

The SV Cup race brought the same indecision as there was a mix of tire choices, some racers showed up with rain tires and other with the regular dry tires. Both Kana and Rob's Motovan sponsored SV 650's were mounted with Pirelli rain tires.

July 12th 2010 - Mosport Race Report

The Parts Canada Superbike Championship made its annual stop at Mosport International Raceway this past weekend for rounds 4 and 5 of the series. Thursday practice was held under the hottest conditions of the season so far with temperatures in the mid 30’s. Rob had planned on competing in the Sport Twins class and the AM600 class but back to back practices proved to be too much in the hot temperatures and he decided to concentrate on the AM600 for the weekend. Friday practice and qualifying was rained out.

With the help of Michel Sabourin some changes were made on Saturday morning to the suspension of the “Motovan, Durham Top Quality Collision, Suzuki of Newmarket sponsored Suzuki GSX-R600” to eliminate a rear tire ripping issue experienced on Thursday. Friday morning practice showed improvement on the bike and gave a confident feeling for the race later in the day. Kana’s “Motovan, Durham Top Quality Collision, Suzuki of Newmarket Suzuki SV650” needed some minor adjustment also to better suit the high load demands of the fast flowing corners of Mosport.

Race 1, Saturday;

Kana was off first in the Sport Twins class. She rode a great race, challenging pro riders Atkinson on an SV650 and even Darren James on the Harley Davidson XR1200 to eventually finish 10th. Even with a poor start Kana incurred a jump start penalty and was penalized 5 seconds. Parts Canada staff were very generous in handing these awards out at Mosport this year.

The AM600 race was the final race of the day on Saturday and there was 34 hungry riders lined up to provide a spectacular show for the fans. The BulletMoto team received its second jump start penalty of the day when Rob slipped the clutch just a little too much for the Parts Canada officials. A good launch off the line saw him jump into the mix of the line ahead of him and taking a couple positions through turn 1. An exciting battle between Rob #108, Bonin #5 and Gauthier #224 went on throughout the race until #224 crashed out trying to make a pass on the outside of turn 5 on the final lap. Rob held off Bonin to finish in 23rd position.

Race 2, Sunday;

The AM600 race was early in the afternoon. Concentrating too hard on not jump starting took the focus away from getting a great start and Rob was second last going into the first turn. Quickly making up a few positions and settling in with a group of 3 riders for the first few laps provided some action at the back of the pack. A few mistakes had him loose ground on the group ahead and Rob rode a smart end of the race to bring the “Motovan, Durham Top Quality Collision, Suzuki of Newmarket sponsored Suzuki GSX-R600” home in 27th position. “I’m very disappointed with today’s result. I had a good bike under me and expected a lot more out of myself from this race. Transitioning from the SV to the 600 is tougher than first anticipated. I need to sit back and re-evaluate future racing plans. Getting back on the SV may be what I need.”

It was the Sport Twins that went last of the day and it was a very exciting race. Kana was determined to beat James and Atkinson in this race. “I know I can beat them both, that big XR1200 of James just holds me up man!” Not getting her usual rocket start Kana had some work to do right from the beginning of the race. Quickly getting to race pace Kana made her way past Darren James on the #29 and Craig Atkinson on the #41 in the first couple laps and lead a pack of four riders to the finish line. She would better her previous days finish by one position ending up in 9th place. “That was race was a lot of fun for me. Darren and I swapped positions a couple times and I fought to stay ahead of Craig. I’m glad I was able to lead them to the line.”

Although not a highly successful weekend BulletMoto Racing enjoyed Mosport. Seeing some of Canada’s racing greats on Saturday was a special treat for all. But the best part of racing is the time we get to spend with good friends at the track.

BulletMoto would like to thank its supporters; Motovan, Durham Top Quality Collision, Suzuki of Newmarket, Armour Bodies, Quaker State - Shell Lubricants, Hindle exhaust, Vortex, Nexo leathers, Sabourinsky.

June 22nd 2010,

Matsumoto becomes the first women to reach the podium in the SV Cup series.!!!  It was a hot weekend of practice and qualifying that lead up to this great achievement. Bulletmoto started the weekend with a refreshing Friday night practice on the Fabi circuit at Shannonville Motorsports Park. Getting the most out of the sessions the team got familiar with the track layout and made a few set up changes to prepare for the weekend.

With the Saturday morning practices quickly out of the way it was time for some heat races. Rob finished 7th in the SV cup race after a bad judgment call put him on the outside of a rookie racer going into turn 1, a fast right hander. #98 Grekos had brake issues and ran both he and Cousineau into the paved run off area, both were able to continue and finish the race. The #107 of Matsumoto had a good pace and picked up third position on the final lap due to #320 taking a fall. Rob finished 8th in the middleweight sportsman heat race.

Sunday's race action promised to be hot and so was the weather. Hot and humid, hopefully our time racing in the Dominican heat would help us here. The SV Cup race was the early race of the day getting started before the lunch break and Rob got a great start from the second row and blasted into second position by corner 2, hunting down the #171 of Sabourin. Kana would take that position away from Rob on the long back stretch. "I tried to stay with her and take the position back but she was just too quick today. It's really great to see her on the podium. First women to do it too. Pretty cool huh!" said Rob. Unfortunately Rob lost the third position to the #41 of Nadeau who capitalized on a slight mistake made going into the hairpin. The race was cancelled just after the half way point due to a red flag incident.

Kana started fourth in the Race Women's Open and finished fourth in an an eventful race. Rob competed in the final race on the schedule, the middleweight sportsman race. After getting another great start from the second row a "brain fart" caused him to again run off into the turn 1 run off area on lap 1. "I just lost focus for an instant, it was stupid. I thought my race was done and there would be no one to race with but to my surprise Hans on the Orange #8 shot past me as I re-entered the track. I quickly passed him back, set a steady pace and thought it was done until I was saw the #595 of T.J. taking a look inside. From there I had a fun race playing with the two of them as battled for position". Rob finished 8th.

May 17th 2010,

Round 2 of the RACE Super Series was held this past weekend at Shannonville. The weather was great and so was the racing. We used Friday practice to re acquaint ourselves with the Long track layout of the circuit. I haven't raced on it since 2007 and it's been a year for Kana. Having injured my back last week I decided to leave the new 600cc machine at home and ride my SV650 as it can offer a somewhat "plush" ride.

The Saturday afternoon heat race for the middleweight went well and I secured a good spot for Sunday's final. Kana finished 5th in her WCC heat race. The SV Cup heat race was cancelled due to unscheduled delays on the track.

Sunday morning came and with it sunny skies and warm temperatures. The morning was started with the annual MAX memorial breakfast hosted by Rahul Duha and Golo racing. It's a great event that raises money to go towards race track safety at Shannonville. This year a record $2600.00 was raised. I'm certain Michel Mercier will make excellent use of the funds, based on rider input.

The morning practice sessions were quickly out of the way and my Middleweight Sportsman race was the first one on the schedule. I got a good start and started counting down the laps and kept a steady strong pace as there was really no one around me. I finished the race in 8th position and started to prepare for the SV Cup race later in the day.

I was starting on the front row sandwiched between my wife on one side and my good friend on the other, this was going to be a good race. I tried to get a good start but anticipated a little too much, more on that later. The light went green and off we went, I was second into turn 1 right behind my friend Michel. By the third lap it was clear that Michel was running a very strong pace and I couldn't match it. I turned consistent laps and was passed by #41 Nadeau coming into Allen's corner on the 2nd last lap. I didn't let it go easily though, attempting several passes on the last lap to take back the position but it wasn't to be. I crossed the line in 3rd place. However that position would be taken away due to a 5 second jump start penalty, putting back to 6th.

Kana did well in the first WCC round of the season, riding her SV650 to an uneventful yet strong 5th place finish. In the SV Cup race she struggled right from the start with a group of riders battling for third and the opportunity to get by and ride at her own pace never really presented itself. She crossed the finish line in 5th but was credited with 4th after the jump start penalty was applied to me #108.

May 3rd 2010,

After a long winter of training and prepping the 2010 race season finally got under way at Shannonville Motorsport Park last weekend. Both Kana and I were eager to get started and travelled to the track early Friday to get some extra track time in before the races. Saturday morning came and the practice sessions were quickly out of the way as we moved to the afternoon qualifying sessions.

RC #108 - I was riding my new GSXR600 and was taking my time to get comfortable on it, slowly increasing the pace with every lap. I rode smart in both qualifiers knowing that the race is not won there but certainly can be lost there. Placing 15th on the grid for the 600 and the Open class race I was near the rear and had a challenge ahead of me for Sunday.

KM #107 – Due to a heavy rain fall and the low turnout for the Women’s Open Class, the qualifying session was cancelled. Kana did compete in the SV Cup heat race where she placed 5th and start in that 5th position for Sunday’s race.

RACE DAY – In an effort to get ahead of the weather RACE director Chris Chapelle and his crew decided to shorten the morning practice schedule and get four races in before the lunch break. My Novice 600 race was the second to go and I was pumped to ride my first real race since last August. Starting 15th on the grid I got a great launch for the start of the race which was quickly halted due to a massive mayhem back at the start line. A rider on the front row stalled his bike and that started a five bike pile up. I had just as good a launch on the re-start and was quickly ahead of at least 6 riders before turn 2. I ran a great race with consistent lap times and finished 8th. The afternoon’s Novice Open race was similar with a thrilling finish. I got another great start from the 15th grid position passing many riders before the second corner. I had a run a very steady race and caught up to lap a rider in the last few corners but his lines were very unpredictable and I was cautious in making the move on him when the rider who was chasing me tried to sneak inside the both of us in the last corner. I was very aggressive in shutting the door to claim my second 8th position of the day.

Kana rode an uneventful race in the Women’s class and finished 3rd, there were only 4 riders in the race. The afternoon’s SV Cup race was thrilling as always. Getting an unusually poor start Kana found herself near the back of the pack going into turn 1. With determination and quick lap times she quickly put herself into 3rd position. Trying a few times to pass #41 Sean Nadeau for second place Kana felt as she was being held up and needed to get by to ride at her own pace. It all went wrong in turn 5 on the second last lap when Kana missed a downshift and with the lack of engine braking closed very quickly on Nadeau. Unable to slow the bike enough the collision was unavoidable and her front wheel hit Nadeau’s rear wheel as he turned into the corner causing Kana to low side and slide off the track. The only injuries were to the bike and Kana’s pride as her first SV Cup podium position was gone.

BulletMoto would like to thank those who make the dream possible; Motovan, Durham Top Quality Collision, Suzuki of Newmarket, Armour Bodies, Quaker State - Shell Lubricants, Hindle exhaust, Vortex, Nexo leathers.

March 2010

The long winter of waiting to race came to an early end for us this year. Thanks to an offer from Diego and Juan of Accelerando TV and 911 Energy drinks we were to attend our first race of the 2010. We flew to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to participate in the opening round of the Dominican National Championship. Thanks to winter training both Kana and I were ready to ride. Kana was a little anxious about racing a GSXR600cc for the first time while I on the other was very excited about riding a Superbike. What a "Superbike" it was, in need of super attention is more like it. It was a terrible machine to ride as confirmed by Canadian RACE Superbike and 600 Sportbike champion Andrew Nelson who was there to compete also.

Friday practice: Due to the circumstances of several of the available bikes available, most of Friday was spent working on bikes to determine which were actually fit to race. Kana was quickly up to speed on a well prepared 2008 GSXR600. "It if faster than what I thought it would be, and sad to think I've competed against this power with my SV650 for the past two seasons."  The Superbike I was supposed to ride really didn't come together well and I hardly got any practice time in at all. I was unsure after Friday practice exactly what I was going to do. Off for some Presidenté!

Saturday qualifying: The morning practice was very short for Kana who had only done a handful of laps when she had to leave the track for a live TV interview. I did some practice and set up the bike where it was comfortable for both of us. In the afternoon Kana had trouble adapting to the Pirelli's from the Dunlop's she rode in the morning. However she brought up her pace and qualified 8th in the Amateur class where they combine 600cc up to 1000cc bikes. Giving up the idea of racing a really bad Superbike we decided that Kana, Joey McRae and I would share the GSXR600 as we were racing in different classes. Yea, three of us. Just wait it gets better.... So at the last minute, and feeling good from the morning warm up, I got out and qualified 6th in the Pro and Amateur 600cc class.

Sunday RACE DAY!!!  We're there for this day and Kana fell ill with a bad stomach virus. She was unable to race, not even able to come to the track. There was no way she leaving the comfort of the Marriott to go to a hot race circuit where the bathrooms are a "crap shoot" at best. So with that things with bike allocation and classes we were competing in changed once again. I ended up taking Kana's position in the Amateur class and with the very enthusiastic encouragement of the "loco" Dominican race fans I competed in the best race since my injuries of 2008. I was able to hold off a hard charging Canadian, riding a 750cc, to finish 6th.

So the final outcome of the second annual Dominican racing trip is a split decision. Kana was ill, I did well but and we both decided "never again" which ironically is what we said after the last time. However, there is a strange pull that may get us there once again if the opportunity should arise.

Winter....

09/28/09

Matsumoto wins final race of the year! After 6 months of racing the final round came to SMP. Rob was still healing from a collar bone injury so it was up to Kana once again to make a showing for Bulletmoto Racing.

Saturday morning practice went very well and Kana's lap times were very competitive. Having competed on the Pro track just three weeks prior and with the bike set up just right it was easy to get a comfortable feeling for the afternoon qualifying heat races. Placing 8th in the SV Cup heat race and 3rd in the RWO she was happy with the results, "I'm feeling good and it looks like it might rain tomorrow so we'll wait and see what happens".

As predicted the rain started falling early Sunday morning and would end up being the proverbial equalizer throughout the day. Kana decided at the last moment to enter the WCC race and took last place on the starting grid. Still a little gunshy with the clutch Kana pulled away slowly. The field spread out quickly in the light rain conditions and Matsumoto was able to hold off a hard charging #332 of Roxanne Gravelle to finish 3rd in her first race of the day.

The SV Cup race was right after the WCC race so a quick break in pit lane and Kana was off to take her spot on the third row. She needed to get a good start to break away from the mid pack and she did. After an almost disastrous highside going through the esses on the first lap the #107 rider was able to put in some solid laps sitting securely in 7th place. However the rain started to fall a little heavier and a braking error at the end of the backstretch would force Matsumoto to take the run-off area and rejoin the race in last place. A crash by Nadeau and Mills in the closing stages of the race worked in Kana's favor and she would be credited with an 8th place finish.

The Race Women's Open race was a little after the lunch break and it was time for "Rocket Girl" to shine. The rain had let up for the start of the race but the racing surface was wet. Kana got a great start and shot right into third on the first lap. With a pre-determined race plan Kana put her head down and began her charge for the lead. On lap 2 she made a pass on Championship leader Provost and then set her sites on Gareau. With a daring pass into Allen's corner, quoted by Franklin Domingues (Gareau's husband) as being Loco, Matsumoto moved to the front for her first lead of an expert's class race. Once up front there was no looking back and Kana crossed the finish line to take her first expert win!

BulletMoto Racing would like to thank all of its supporters without whom none of this would be possible; Motovan, Durham Top Quality Collision, Quaker State/Pennzoil and Shell lubricants, Suzuki of Newmarket and Suzukapower.com

09/07/09

The summer weather we’ve been waiting for finally arrived for the Labor day Classic at Shannonville Motorsports Park. It was hot and sticky and so were the Pirelli girls. Kana struggled through Friday practice and Saturday qualifying with an ill handling motorcycle. After consultation with John at Accelerated Technologies the forks were removed from the bike and changes were made. Sunday morning practice revealed that the previous nights work paid off when Kana practiced 2 seconds faster than she qualified the previous day.  This gave her a lot of confidence going into the afternoon races knowing that her bike would respond when pushed.

The WCC race held just before lunch and all eyes were on the track when the women rolled onto the grid. Kana didn't get the start she needed to hold the pack off until the hairpin and soon settled into fourth place where she finished the race without incident. The SV Cup race was the last on the schedule. Kana got a good start and was enjoying herself on track with battles for positions with several different riders. She cross the finish line in 10th position! Her best finish at a National in the very competitive SV Cup class.

Rob was OK to ride the pit bike but that's as far as it went. He's still healing from the broken collar bone sustained at the previous round, see news item below, and hoping to ride at the final round.

08/17/09

Round #5 of the RACE Super Series at Shannonville Motorsports Park was held under the hottest conditions of the summer in 32C temperatures. The team started early with Rob feeling good enough to ride on the Friday practice day for the first time all year. Lap times improved throughout the day with slight changes to the suspension and the confidence was returning. A nice night at the track with refreshments and friends put a great perspective on the weekend.

Rob was able to drop another second off his lap time during the second of three Saturday morning practice sessions. “I’m feeling really good. The bike is working perfectly and I’m hoping for a turnaround weekend.”  Kana took the time to familiarize herself with the Nelson track configuration which she hasn’t raced on in over a year. Unfortunately while testing the limits both BulletMoto Racing riders went down, simultaneously in turn 5 during the third practice session of the morning. “Although it’s the first time a husband and wife have crashed at the same time it’s not exactly what we want to be remembered for.” Kana was able to get up and walk away but a trip to the Napanee hospital revealed a broken collar bone for Rob ending the stellar weekend and sidelining him for the remainder of the season. A visibly upset Cousineau said “I’m very disappointed. I’ve worked so hard to get back to where I was and things were going so well for me this weekend. This is a huge set back and not how I wanted to end the season.”

Without taking part in the qualifying heat races the previous day Kana started both her Sunday races from the final start position. In the Race Women's Open class the #107 SV650 of Matsumoto got a good start and battled in the race with 600cc Novice riders Maude Labrosse-Legris and Sam Goyer. Almost high-siding exiting turn 2 on the chase for Maude #96 during the last lap would see Kana settle into a relaxed pace for the remainder of the race placing third in the RWO Expert class. Kana now sits in 3rd position in the RWO points race.

Again starting from the last position, Kana got a good jump in the SV race and quickly picked off riders going through turns 1 and 2. Finding a good pace in 11th spot for most of the race the chase was on when #65 Clarington Cycle Rider Ed Beck passed Kana with three laps to go "Chasing Eddie is always fun, he has great lines" said Kana "but I really wanted the position". Finishing 12th in the SV650 race put an end to a challenging weekend for Team BulletMoto Racing. Kana now sits in 10th position in the SV Cup points race.

BulletMoto Racing attended the third round of the RACE Super Series, held at Shannonville Motorsport Park this past weekend. Friday's practice sessions were warm and sunny but Saturday morning greeted the racers with threatening grey skies.

Kana started the first practice session on dry tires but as soon as she entered the track the rain began to fall and she had to pull in after just one lap. The remainder of the practice sessions were run in wet condition and Kana used the time to improve on her already untouchable rain riding prowess. In the afternoon’s heat races, Matsumoto lead the women in the WCC class to take her first Pole position and rode extremely well with the guys in the SV Cup heat race nabbing 5th position on the starting grid, just one position away from the front row.

The WCC race was the first of two races for Kana on Sunday. From pole position she got the holeshot and led the ladies through to turn 3 where Nathalie Catherine Provost #23 gained the lead and never looked back. Kana settled into third position after the first lap where she would finish on the podium. Another great start in the SV Cup race had Kana running in the top 6 for most of the race, dicing it up with front runner Kamp #911 and holding off quick riders like Chris Dopke #320. She rode well with confidence but it would all go wrong for the young dragon coming through Allen’s corner on the second to last lap when Doug Mills #297 miss-timed his pass on Kana and took out her front end causing her to crash. She was unable to re-mount and the race was red flagged.

Rider #108 Rob Cousineau is recovering from minor wrist surgery and did not compete in the weekend’s races.

Both BulletMoto riders will take the next few weeks to recover and repair the motorcycles for the next National event at their home track Mosport International Raceway on July 16th to 19th.

The first National event of the year was held this past weekend at Calabogie Motorsports Park located in the beautiful Madawaska region of Ontario near Ottawa. It was a trying weekend as this was the location that ended the 2008 season for BulletMoto rider #108 Rob Cousineau one year ago and led to months of intense rehab.

The team started the weekend with a 25 minute practice session on Thursday to familiarize themselves with the new layout used for this year. The 5 km full track has 20 turns and 65 feet of elevation changes and is a pleasure to ride but tough to learn.  Friday and Saturday morning were used for practice and suspension set-up for the ultra-sticky track surface.  Saturday afternoon’s qualifying sessions went well for both the #107 of Matsumoto and the #108 of Cousineau aboard their Suzuki SV 650’s.

The sun was shinning Sunday morning as the riders arrived at the track. The morning practice confirmed that the bikes were set-up right and ready to go. Kana was first to race as the Women’s Cup Challenge race was held in a prime spot just before the lunch break. Kana launched the Suzuki SV650 at the green light and never looked back attacking every corner. No doubt at a horsepower disadvantage on this long and fast track Matsumoto did very well finishing in 8th position holding off three in-line 600 cc machines that have 40 more horsepower than her 72 horsepower SV 650.

The SV Cup race got under way at the end of the day but was quickly stopped during lap two by a red flag due to an incident in turn 8 “Temptation” where rider Lee Kun Jr. was a little too aggressive in passing and took out Joe Rodrigues ending the race for both riders. The re-start was quick and Rob rode a strong and confident race chasing down the 107 of Matsumoto and passing her going into the very fast turn 17. Matsumoto was surprised by the pass not knowing that Cousineau was so close behind. Kana made a charge and re-passed her teammate on the long 2000 feet back straight, causing Rob to chuckle just a bit in his helmet. Rob didn’t give up and was just about to re-take the 12th position going into “the Hook” when he encountered a fuel starvation issue and had to pull off the track on the second last lap for the first DNF of the season for the team.

BulletMoto Racing will take a well deserve break as Rob goes in for surgery next week on his right wrist to have the hardware removed.  The team expects to make a strong showing at their home track Mosport when the National series returns for the double-header in mid July.

The second round of the R.A.C.E. SuperSeries was held this weekend in very adverse weather conditions. Saturday morning's practice sessions were delayed due to high winds and very heavy rain. Once things got underway BulletMoto Racing's two riders took to the track for some needed practice time. Both Kana and Rob were able to get a good feel for the Long Track layout and were prepared for the afternoon heat races where they both finished well gathering mid pack starting positions for Sunday's races.

Sunday morning greeted the racers with sunny skies but only 5 degree C temperatures. Rob #108 and Kana #107 both started the SV Cup race from the 8th row. Rob chased Kana for the entire 8 lap race finishing just 1 second behind her at the finish line. "It was a great race. I'm having a lot of fun this year and my confidence is slowly rebuilding. With that I hope to regain my speed and improve throughout the year. Next week's race at Calabogie is a challenge that I've been looking forward to."

Matsumoto also took part in the first round of the "Honda Pro Oils Women's Cup Challenge" this past weekend. She registered late for the class and started from the last position in the Expert field. The Durham Top Quality Collision sponsored rider got a habitual great start and immediately jumped into third position. She worked on chasing down the second position rider Bouchard but ran out of time and finished third for her first Expert podium finish. "My first race as an Expert rider felt good. I diced it up with Vanessa Gareau and Josée Bouchard for the first lap until we hit the back straight where they used their additional power to pull away. The trophies received in the Expert class are much nicer and will show well."

BulletMoto Racing travels to Calabogie this week to take part in the first round of the Parts Canada National Superbike series held on May 21st to 24th.

On May 2nd and 3rd, BulletMoto Racing returned to the track for the first time in 2009 for round #1 of the R.A.C.E. Superseries held at Shannonville Motorsport Park. Kana, #107, rode well in the SVCup race and finished the weekend with a win in the Race Women’s Open class, Novice division. She was also presented with the opportunity to be a guest participant in the CBR 125 Challenge race. “Winning the first RACE Women’s Open event of the season felt good. It was also a lot of fun to ride in the CBR Challenge. It’s a great path for the younger riders to get into the sport at a very reasonable cost. I’d like to see additional younger people out at the track”.

Rob’s return to the track had a different purpose. After 11 months of no riding, 7 months of rehab and countless hours of soul-searching the finishing positions had absolutely no importance to the success of his weekend. “My goal was to get on track to shake out the cobwebs. I wanted to start the race and see the checkered flag on my last lap and I didn’t care where I finished. I started well in both classes, enjoyed the races and finished somewhere near the back. For me that is a big win and
I left the track feeling successful”.

The team would like to thank all their supporters; Suzuki of Newmarket, Envy Rides, Hindle exhaust, Motovan, Quaker State Lubricants and Nexo sports. A big thank you goes to the crew at Durham Top Quality Collision for providing the team with some great looking bikes.

To watch the team on track, come to Shannonville Motorsport Park on May 16th to 17th for round #2 of the RACE Superseries. Visit the site, www.bulletmotoracing.com, for photos and additional information.

Matsumoto finishes season with a win!

Bulletmotoracing's Kana Matsumoto returned to the site of her first win for the final event of the 2008 season. Shannonville Motorsport Park was the host of the double-header weekend and the racing was tight as the points battle had not yet been resolved. Although Anissa B. "Cowasaki rider #416" had the championship in the bag, second place was open for takers.

The timed qualifying session was held Saturday morning on a slightly damp track and cool conditions. Adjustments were made to the bike to help in the conditions and Kana grabbed the pole position for both races edging out Anissa by a slim 3 tenths of a second.

Race 1 - Saturday afternoon. Getting off to an unusual slow start on her 2007 SV650S due to some shifting issues Kana managed to hold second place through the first turn and opening lap. She slipped into her rhythm turning consistent laps while the girls diced it out for 3rd place behind her. However, newcomer Anne Deschenes #771 had her eye on second position and began chasing down the #107 of Matsumoto, surprising her with a pass on the back-straight on the final lap. Dechenes would take second place for only two corners as a brave braking maneuver by Kana into "Allen's corner" put her firmly into second where she would cross the finish line one turn later. *Points from this race were scored in both the Women's Cup Challenge and the Women's RACE Novice class.

Race 2 - Sunday would bring similar overcast conditions as were experienced the previous day. The Women's race went just after lunch and there were many spectators and racers gathered to watch it unfold. Getting the hole shot and mixing it up with the Expert riders into the first corner, Kana lead the Novice girls through the first 5 turns to the long Shannonville straight on the first lap. However as we saw many times this year the horsepower disadvantage of the V-twin equipped SV was evident on the straights as Anissa would pass using the power of the 600 c.c. 4 cylinder Kawasaki ZX-6R. Unfortunately Burachynsky suffered a non-injury causing highside through the hairpin on lap 3 handing the lead over to Matsumoto. Kana rode the final laps with confidence and consistency and finished first for the second time this year. *Points from this race were scored in WCC only.

Kana Matsumoto - "What a great way to end a tough season, I'm very happy! My only expectations for the weekend were to finish well and be content with my riding and I managed to do that. Winning the Sunday race was a bonus, although Anissa did crash out of first place ahead of me. But that's racing, I crashed out of the previous round and finished without points. I was happy to see that she was OK after the fall. I'm looking forward to our race in Dominican Republic this coming November and a successful 2009 season."

Rob Cousineau - "Watching Kana excel and personally improve throughout the summer was nice, three wins that's just awesome! I had to settle in and take a different role for the last few races of the year and it gave me a different perspective of what we do. With that said I don't think I was made to watch, I'm eagerly awaiting spring of 2009."

Bulletmotoracing will travel to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in November to compete in some invitational and regional competitions.
